Neighbourhood Battery Training – February 2025
Neighbourhood batteries are increasingly recognised as a vital component in the transition to a cleaner, more resilient energy system. To help advance the development of neighbourhood battery projects in Victoria the Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action (DEECA) has engaged the Yarra Energy Foundation (YEF) to deliver a two-day advanced training course on 18–19 February 2025 in Fitzroy.
This training is designed to improve the quality and maturity of neighbourhood battery project proposals, particularly for those applying for funding through the Victorian Government’s 100 Neighbourhood Batteries program.
“The course exceeded my expectations. The knowledge sharing from YEF of their own experiences owning and operating a battery plus industry insights from completing a wide range of NB business cases is invaluable information that isn’t otherwise accessible for many organisations. This course is a financially viable way to access a high level of expertise that is essential knowledge if planning to proceed with a NB project.”

Delivered over two days, the course will cover:
- steps towards developing a robust project plan and business case for a NB
- fundamentals of Battery Energy Storage System components, operation, and procurement
- process for determining whether a NB is the right solution for your circumstances
- different value streams available to owners of NBs, including market participation, retail arrangements and network tariffs
- different business/operating models, use cases, and dispatch control methods including neighbourhood batteries in energy back-up systems
- processes and criteria for site identification, assessment, and approval
- approaches to successfully communicating and meaningfully engaging with stakeholders
- role of NBs in decarbonising the energy system
- priorities for project management, including identifying relevant project partners and determining the sequencing of critical project activities.
You will also hear from expert guest speakers, including those who have delivered neighbourhood batteries (including as resilient energy back-up systems), and hear perspectives from Distribution Network Service Providers.
On the first day, participants will have an opportunity to visit the Fitzroy North community battery.
The Victorian Government and YEF are providing significant co-subsidies for the General Admission and Non-Profit tickets. All information on ticket pricing and NFP registration can be found at the link below:
“The knowledge of the presenters, based on real experience was very impressive. Their presentation was very clear and convincing. Their supporting materials, the booklet and slides, were excellent. The way they were used, together with the group sessions, made it a true learning experience.”
