Neighbourhood Battery Training – February 2025
Neighbourhood batteries are a vital component in the energy transition, helping to stabilise the grid, supporting household solar and, in some instances, offering back-up power in times of emergency.
To help community groups, local governments and other organisations learn about these systems Yarra Energy Foundation (YEF) is providing a two-day advanced training course on the 18th-19th February 2025.
This training course, funded by the Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action (DEECA), is specifically tailored to assist those applying for funding through the Victorian Government’s 100 Neighbourhood Batteries program.
“The course exceeded my expectations. The knowledge sharing from YEF of their own experiences owning and operating a battery plus industry insights from completing a wide range of NB business cases is invaluable information that isn’t otherwise accessible for many organisations. This course is a financially viable way to access a high level of expertise that is essential knowledge if planning to proceed with a NB project.”

Delivered over two days, the course will cover:
- Project plan development and business case considerations
- BESS fundamentals (components, operation and procurement)
- Determining whether a neighbourhood battery is the right solution
- Different value streams including market participation, retail arrangements and network tariffs
- Different business/operating models, use cases, and dispatch control methods, including back-up or resilience batteries
- Site identification, assessment, and approval processes
- Communicating and engaging with stakeholders
- Neighbourhood batteries and decarbonisation
- Project management priorities, partners and critical activities
Attendees will hear from expert guest speakers, offering real world experience, as well as perspectives from Distribution Network Service Providers. On the first day, participants will have an opportunity to visit the Fitzroy North community battery
“The knowledge of the presenters, based on real experience was very impressive. Their presentation was very clear and convincing. Their supporting materials, the booklet and slides, were excellent. The way they were used, together with the group sessions, made it a true learning experience.”
